Allowing for Thermal Expansion
At 1000°F typical stainless steel expands almost 1/8 of an
inch per foot in
length.
That means a simple ten foot section of ducting would grow by more than an inch!
Even a ten foot run of mild steel ducting at only 650°F will grow by 1/2 of an
inch. Without a flexible connector to absorb the expansion a fan housing
can be twisted and distorted. In some cases the fan housing even gets
pushed into the rotating fan wheel.

You might have noticed the
new shipping brackets in these pictures. They are steel and attached to
the outside of every connector. By separating the frames, they protect the
sleeves during shipment and they make installation of the connector easier and
safer.
